Information about the Law in Spain for Driving Licenses and Regulations
Published: 01/12/2010
Drivers from other EU countries can drive in Spain on their original licence providing it has not expired or is otherwise invalid.
It is important to note that Spain may impose its own conditions relating to the validity period of the license, medical check ups and taxes. The Spanish authorities can record on the licence any administrative information that they may require.
The driver of any vehicle or motorcycle in Spain is required by law to carry a valid current licence to drive that type of vehicle, the vehicles insurance documents and proof of ownership. It is good practise to carry proof that the insurance is paid in the form of a bank statement in addition to the insurance documentation if it has been issued by a Spanish insurer.
If you are not the owner of the vehicle or motorcycle or accompanied by the owner, you may also be asked to provide authorisation that you are permitted to drive it.
Driving licences can be obtained in Spain subject to the following conditions: -
- You must have official residency, a residency permit or a Spanish electoral register certificate.
- Students must show that they have resided in Spain for a minimum continuous period of six months.
- That your previous vehicle or motorcycle driving licence is not suspended or been legally revoked.
- That you are physically and mentally capable in relation to the type of licence that is being applied for and that you pass a relevant theoretical and practical examination as required by the Provincial or Local Traffic Headquarters.
- Age Limits: -
- Class A1 licences (motor scooters up to 100 cc) - 16 years old.
- Class A, B and B+E, C1, C1+E, C and C+E licences – 18 years old.
